Common Name: Chocolate Vine
 
Habit: Native to Japan, China and Korea, the Akebia is a fast growing, deciduous vine reaching up to 10 meters tall.  The dark green and glossy leaves grow in clusters of 5 ovals.
Flowers: In the spring many rich purple/brown flowers hang down from the branches, these blooms have a chocolate scent to them giving the plant its name.  If you have more than one Akebia plant, you may get fruit late in summer. The fruits look similar to eggplants and have a slightly tapioca flavour.
Care: Soil needs to be loamy, well drained with plenty of organic matter. Choose a location with plenty of space in full sun, pruning is very necessary as this vine is fast growing and can take over if not kept in check.  It is drought resistant but does benefit from regular watering.  Fertiliser is not necessary however if you feel the need an all purpose fertiliser during the growing season is fine. 
Garden uses:  This very fast growing vine is excellent on arbores, fences and trellises.

طبيعة النبتة: تتميز بسرعة نموها حيث قد يصل طولها ل10م. تجف في بعض الفصول. تتميز أوراقها بلونها الأخضر الغامق الامع.
طبيعة الزهرة: تزهر في فصل الربيع تتميز بلونها البنفسجي/ البني الغامق ورائحتها المائلة لرائحة الشوكولاتة. قد تزهر في اّخر فصل الصيف ثمارا تشبة الباذنجان.
العناية: تفضل المناطق المكشوفة التي تتعرض للكثير من الشمس. التقليم يساعدها على النمو بشكل أسرع.
إستخداماتها في الحديقة: تعتبر من أفضل النباتات للمعرشات والأسوار.
