Common Name: Apricot
Habit: Apricots are native to China and is a small deciduous tree growing up to 12m tall. They take on a gnarled look as they grow creating a striking silhouette in the winter time when the plant is bare. During the growing season it has a dense canopy with a spreading habit. Leaves have a rounded base, pointed tip and an ovate shape.
Flowers: The small, pink or white blooms are up to 4cm across with 5 petals. They appear in early spring before the leaves and are followed by yellow-orange stone fruit. Apricots need a certain number of chill hours to set fruit properly.
Care: Plant as soon as the ground thaws, soil needs to contain nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Ensure soil is firm around the roots so that the tree can get all the nutrients it needs. When fruits reach around 3cm in diameter thin out to 3 or 4 per cluster to give them room to grow and prevent the tree from overbearing.
