Common Name: Artichoke
 
Habit: Artichoke plants can grow up to more than a meter tall and are often planted purely for their ornamental appeal the leaves are long, arching and silvery green, on thick stems. 
Flowers:  The flower buds look a little like pinecones, they are tender edible and are a common vegetable in Europe and America. If left to mature they are a rich purple thistle-like flower head.
Care: Plant in full sun with perhaps a little shade in very hot summers, Artichokes set buds best in full sun.  Choose a well draining loamy soil with good organic matter, which retains enough moisture to cope with the heat of summer.  Mulch well to keep weeds down, keep roots cool and retain moisture.
