Common Name: Emerald fern

 

Habit: Asparagus fern is a South African native is a scrambling perennial with trailing green stems reaching up to 1 meter. The dense foliage is fine giving it a feathery appearance and is a dark green colour. It's trailing habit makes it excellent in hanging baskets.

Flowers: From Spring to Autumn small, greenish, bell shaped flowers appear. These are followed by green berries which slowly turn black as they age. 

Care: Use a soil based potting mixture and repot into one size larger each spring until the required size is reached. Choose a location with plenty of light but out of direct sun as this will burn the leaves.  Actively water during the growing season just enough to keep the soil moist but not waterlog the plant. Reduce watering during the rest period. Fertilise with a liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks during the growing period.
