Common Name: Bougainvillea
 
Habit: A vigorously climbing vine when it is supported, many people do not realise that if unsupported it is a lovely compact ground cover. Thin, textured downy leaves grow on woody stalks and they use their sharp thorns to attach to trellises and fences. In colder climates, it is best to grow in a container to be brought indoors for the winter.
Flowers:  Flowering for most of the warm seasons the blooms are small tubular flowers, ivory or yellow in colour. The true dramatic effect comes from the colourful bracts that surround the flower in almost any vibrant colour.
Care: Bougainvillea requires a full sun location to grow well. They are extremely drought resistant, in fact do not do well if overwatered so only water when the top 5cm or so of the soil is dry. Choose a well draining slightly acidic soil and fertilise once a month with a half strength mix of an all purpose fertiliser.
Remove dead wood as it appears and save any heavy pruning for late Autumn or early spring, otherwise simply pinch out new growth as you go to encourage a fuller habit.
