Common Name: Carob
Habit:  A slow growing medium, evergreen tree reaching 15meters tall.  Leaves are leathery and shiny dark green while the new growth is bronze in colour. It makes an excellent hedging plant being evergreen and very strong with thick foliage.
Flowers: Blossoms appear in Autumn generally after the tree is 6or so years old. They are small on individual tiny stalks along a central stem, blooms at the base of the stem develop first. Seed pods grow on old stems on short stalks. They are broad thick and around 30cm long. The pods can be eaten raw or roasted and ground to a powder, their flavour is very similar to chocolate.
Care: Carob prefers dry climates which receive more than 30cm of rain annually. Well suited to dry, infertile environments the tree actually seems to prefer dry rocky sites.  Water until established and ensure winter temperatures do not fall below -8 deg. C as this will cause damage to the plant and retard fruiting.

طبيعة النبتة: دائمة الإخضرار. تعرف ببطىء نموها. قد يصل طولها ل15م. تعرف أوراقها بلونها الأخضر الغامق الامع. يمكن إستخدامها كحاجز.
طبيعة الزهرة: تظهر زهورها في فصل الخريف ولكن عندما تكون الشجرة أكبر من 6 سنين. يمكن أكل بذورها ويعرف طعمها بأنه شبيه بطعم الشوكولاته.
العناية: تفضل المناخ الجاف. وتنمو في بشكل أفضل في المناطق الجافة.
