Common Name: Dianthus
 
Habit:  Dianthus is a hardy annual which grows up to 45cm tall and is often used for borders or potted displays.  Foliage is slender and sparsely spread on thick stems, leaves are narrow blue or grey/green.
Flowers:  In spring and summer blooms appear at the tops of wiry stems, these flowers have a spicy scent similar to cinnamon or cloves. Petals come in shades of pink, salmon, red or white with notched petals.
Care: Dianthus likes Fertile, well drained, alkaline soil. Plant after the danger of frost has passed and do not mulch, you can avoid the need to fertilise by working a slow release fertiliser into the soil when planting.  Ensure when watering to keep the leaves dry to prevent mould.
