Common Name: Bay Tree
 
Habit: This Mediterranean native tree has smooth green leaves up to 12cm long and 4cm wide. It makes an excellent hedging plant.
Flowers: The blooms are a pale yellow/green and grow in pairs beside a leaf, they are small being only around 1cm across and are followed by a small shiny black berry. If kept in pots however these plants rarely flower. The leaves are used in soups and stews to add flavour and removed before serving.
Care: Bay trees grow well indoors and can be trimmed into topiary shapes in the summer. Keep in mind that this plant is slow growing so would take time to recover if pruned hard.
Outside the plant can manage temperatures down to -5C but freezing cold will damage the foliage. During the growing season water regularly but sparingly as they do not like overwatering, reduce the amount of water during winter.
