Common Name: Variegated New Zealand Flax
Habit: New Zealand Flax is an erect spiky grass like plant with green and yellow variegated foliage that reaches 1.5m high and 1m wide. The long sword like leaves are green in the centre with stripes of yellow on the outer edges forming a large clump.
Flowers: Long dark flower spikes appear in summer ending in red/black claw like flowers. These dramatic flower spikes can get up to 3m high.
Care: This frost hardy grass likes to be placed in full sun so does very well in exposed locations given they are planted in rich well drained soil. Temperatures below -4c can make the leaves curl but the plant will recover just fine as soon as the weather warms up. Remove dead leaves and flowers as you go, to keep the plant looking tidy.
