Common Name: Pomegranate
Habit: Native to Persia (now Iran), the Pomegranate is a deciduous tree or shrub growing up to 8m tall. The leaves are glossy, narrow and oblong reaching up to 7cm long on spiney branches.
Flowers: Blooms appear in late spring and continue through until summer, they are bright red and 3cm across with up to 7 petals. The fruit is typically in season in the summer and autumn and is actually a berry a little bigger than a lemon with a leathery outer skin.
Care: Pomegranates need the soil to be slightly alkaline which can be achieved by adding a little lime to the soil before planting.
