Common Name: Moss Rose or Sun Jewel.
 
Habit: If you live in an area of heat and drought you will adore Portulaca.
This beautiful ground cover has been used on old structures and paths as it grows well in cracks where the wind has blown enough soil for them to take hold. Foliage is cylindrical and succulent growing up to only 15cm tall.
Flowers: They are called moss rose because that's exactly what the flowers look like, they come in singles and doubles which look like small roses. Blooms in a rainbow of colours appear in the summer, they open in sunshine and close at night or on overcast days.
Care: Portulaca can tolerate most soils even poor provided it is well draining. They require very little in the way of care, regular watering will assist with growth and flowering however they can tolerate some drought conditions but do not handle frost at all. Deadhead to promote blooming and prune to create a fuller, neater appearance.
