Autumn is an excellent time of the year to be in the garden. The soil is warm, the days are cooler and you can do few maintenance jobs to keep your garden beautiful and prepare for winter.

Trim your hedges to tidy them up, keep them bushy and remove damaged foliage.

Give your lawn a health check. Take care of weeds, apply a light dusting of lime and aerate.

Check your trees for borer damage, deciduous trees are easier to check without their foliage. Prune any that have become untidy over summer.

Mulch your frost tender plants to protect them for the upcoming winter.

Divide clumping plants. Have a look at plants like Agapanthus or day lilies to see if they need dividing.

Plant spring flowering bulbs so they can start to grow ready for blooming right after winter.

Compost fallen leaves from your garden and lawn, this will prevent them from smothering gardens and lawns.

Look over your pond, tidy up the plants around and in the pond, removing the water plants if the surface is too congested. Check over your pump and filter to make sure they’re in good working order.
