Winter does not have to be a time to ignore your garden, in fact there are plenty of ways to make your garden interesting and beautiful even with snow on the ground. There is something truly beautiful about a winter sunrise striking the snow on bare tree branches making them glow bright with hints of pink and orange. Garden design in winter is only limited by your own imaginations, a row of topiary plants with a dusting of snow on top, a garden path lined by low hedges becomes a very interesting silhouette or perhaps a bird house perched in the branches of your deciduous Japanese Maple, the choices are endless.

Don't forget colour in the garden in the winter, just because it's cold does not mean you can't enjoy colourful winter hardy plants, here are a few you may not have considered:

Decorative Kale and Cabbage plants are beautiful at this time of year with their striking pink and white accents, they come in a few different varieties which give you a lot of choices for your designs. Plant in full sun, keep well watered and use a balanced fertiliser at the time of planting.

Pansies are another excellent choice, they thrive in cold weather. These beautiful little plants can freeze solid and come out the other side ready to bloom and impress. They come in a range of colours and are great for containers, borders or for ground covers. Plant in moist, well drained soil where they will get plenty of sunshine. Use a general fertiliser and remove dead flowers as you go to encourage blooming.

Both of these wonderful plants can be found in our store: https://www.plants2u.org/allproducts
