Something to consider at this time of the year is gift giving. With their chunky leaves and unusual

shapes not to mention the colours, Succulents make excellent gifts. They can be placed into any type of container you like to fit in with any décor or personality. A few ideas for you would be: Teacups, shallow bowls, shallow wooden crates, hollow logs, pots and planters of all shapes and sizes, we have even seen them planted into old boots strategically placed in the garden for a surprise twist.

While the leaves and stalks of the Succulent are in themselves quite intriguing and beautiful some varieties have the most amazing flowers. These blooms range from the simple basic blooms of the ice plant to incredibly complex and colourful flowers produced by some of the cactus varieties all guaranteed to delight.

There are many benefits to creating a succulent garden. You can create the entire garden in an afternoon, it looks immediately attractive and complete and it will not suffer if you forget to water it.
Care is very easy: Ensure the soil is very well drained as the roots will rot if kept too wet. Water infrequently, only every couple of weeks in the warmer months and even less in the winter allowing the soil to dry out in between. Take care some varieties like a little shade in extreme heat. Fertilise once in early spring with a slow release which is low in nitrogen.
