Christmas is a wonderful time of year and we put an amazing amount of work into decorating the inside of our homes just right to celebrate the season. But what can you do to include the lovely outside spaces we have in the joy of the season? Here are some wonderful ideas to get you started in making your small space or balcony festive.

Choose some lovely festive plants to bring out your Christmas colours. Salvia, Poincettia and geraniums are wonderful with their cheerful reds contrasting with the green leaves. Mix them with white varieties to really give the area a Christmas feel.

Don't forget your existing plants, they can be given a Christmas boost with the simple application of fairy lights. If you have a shrub in a large container simply drape it with twinkling Christmas lights to bring it into the theme. There is no rule that says you have to only decorate fir or pine after all.

Small plants in pots can be put into groupings, arrange them in varied heights for interest then drape and wind tinsel about the pots, or even give the pots themselves a little makeover in Christmas colours. Hang some tiny baubles from the medium sized plants to bring out their cheer.

Have a bowl of succulents on a table? Add red candles in strategic positions to add just the right touch and maybe a little romantic feel to the space.

Your choices are almost endless when you really put your mind to it.
