Cotoneaster plant in snow.

We’re half way through Autumn now and Winter is just around the corner. So, before the weather truly gets to its coldest there are a few things you can do in the garden to get it ready for winter, and ensure it is at its best when Spring arrives.

Dig over your garden beds: This will loosen up the soil, which in turn allows the rain during winter to penetrate deeply into the soil. It also gives you a chance to remove any weeds etc from the beds.

Prune: While you are working on your garden beds now is a great time to remove any dead or damaged branches and give your plants a light tip prune, taking care not to cut back too much.

Lawn repair: Now you’ve sorted the garden take a look at your lawns, do any last minute lawn seeding,

checking areas with high foot traffic. Rolls of ready to go lawn are inexpensive and are an easy way to repair sections of lawn that are looking bare without having to wait for seeds to sprout.

Fertilise: Draw up a plan to put sulfate ammonia on the lawns in January with the rain when it arrives. Make certain of the rain before applying the powder as without watering in the mix will burn your grass.

Horticultural Fleece: Also called garden fleece, this product is almost a must in the Jordanian climate. Garden Fleece is a thin, unwoven fabric which is very light weight and is used to protect plants from the cold and frosts while allowing light and water to penetrate.

Most Important! Add some colour to your garden and continue to enjoy it. Pansies, Calendula, stocks, Kale and Snapdragons all do very well in the cold and can add a lovely boost of colour just when you need it most.
