Bougainvilleas are a vigorous climbing vine when they are supported using their sharp thorns to attach to trellises and fences. A little known fact however is that they can be trained into a lovely shrub or used as a compact ground cover.

If it is a shrub you are after then simply keep the plant trimmed to the shape and size you prefer. This also has the added benefit of improving flowering as the blooms grow on new wood.

The real feature of the Bougainvillea are the vibrantly colored bracts which surround the tiny flowers during the warmer months.

Make sure your Bougainvillea is placed into full sun and well drained soil, they are very drought resistant and do not do well if over watered. Ensure to fertilise once a month with a half strength, all purpose fertiliser and sit back to enjoy the show.
