Indoor plants are a fantastic idea to brighten up your home for several reasons. They are very relaxing and add an outdoor element to your home and studies have shown that plants indoors help to filter out any toxins that are in the air from furniture and floor coverings.
Step one is to choose the pots you want to use and where you'd like them to go. It's a good idea to stick to neutral designs as they are less likely to go out of style. You will want to be able to slide the plastic pot your plant is in directly inside the decorative, this helps insulate the plant and make moving it around much easier if needed.
Next choose plants that will be happy in the locations you have selected. Indoor plants can be very particular about where they are located. Today we are talking about those areas with a little less light.
Below are some suggestions for plants which do well in low light situations provided they are given the right care.
Golden Pothos is an evergreen vine with very nice variegated, heart shaped leaves. It is drought tolerant so care only needs to be taken to not overwater.
Dieffenbachia is also variegated, it has straight stems and simple, alternate leaves. The size depends on the size of it's pot, if you put it into a container large enough it can grow up to 1.5 meters tall, a smaller pot will produce a smaller plant.
Dracaena Sanderiana, is a small shrubby plant with strappy leaves and stems which resemble bamboo. It can reach up to 1.5 meters tall.
Sansevieria Trifesciata is made up of stiff leaves rising from a base rosette. The dark green leaves have grey cross banding and can reach up to 90 cm tall.
Aspidistra elatior is what you are looking for if you want a dense bushy shrub reaching up to 60cm tall and as wide. The leaves are a long glossy dark green perfect for filling in a sparse corner.
